The World’s Largest Egg with an Ivory Shell
The ostrich lays a beautiful egg with a cream coloured porcelain like shell perfect for crafting. This egg can be painted eggs, decoupage, carved, decorated in the style of Faberge, made in to lamps – the possibilities are endless.
The ostrich egg is elliptically shaped, weighs approximately 1300 to 1800gms when full and 200gms when empty. Ostrich eggs are approximately 160cm long and 120cm wide with a 2mm thick shell and contain about 1200 to 1600ml of egg – equivalent to about 2 dozen hen’s eggs.
While all ostrich eggs conform to the general elliptical shape you must remember these eggs are created by nature, so every one has its own unique character. They are strong, so strong, a 50kg person can stand on an empty egg without breaking it but if the egg is dropped it will shatter.
Most eggs are incubated and hatch in to ostrich chicks. However the infertile eggs are cleaned of their contents leaving a beautiful shell sort after for crafting and by interior designers for their fascinating simple beauty.
